So I have had my Samsung Galaxy S phone running Android 2.2 (Froyo) since Jan 2011. I am loving the capabilities these new device open up to us in our everyday lives. I am ever-connected to the internet given that I have sufficient coverage, I can instant message my friends and family for free instead of using SMS, I can access all my emails anywhere, any time, I can play games, watch movies, listen to music, read books, the list just goes on and on. "Smart" devices (I like to just call them "devices") really are the next step in the internet age in my opinion.
But after a few months I have found a couple of things in Android that really are annoying me.
1. No folders on the home screen - iOS (not sure which version) has this. To me, this should have been in since version 0.1. Who wouldn't use folders on the home screen? Surely it's not a problem to implement. Hurry up and do it in the stock firmware.
2. No file structure on the sdcard - Install a file manager and take a look at your SD card contents. Completely ridiculous. Each app is allowed to decide where to put its files. This is fine, but why doesn't Android have something like environment variables for developers to use? One called: $PROGRAMS for the programs root directory (I guess if it does exist the variable is set to root directory?) and one called $DOWNLOADS for files that apps download. The user should be able to select where all apps download files to.
3. The media scanner system - I don't know how it works, but I guess the media scanner builds an index of all files on the phone so accessing them becomes easier and faster and probably lowers sd card read/writes. But then sometimes I will do a screen grab or take a photo and then go to gallery and the image is not there. So then I can't send or share it straight away. As far as I know, I need to let media scanner run again to see the files, and I can't force media scanner to run without a phone reboot. This problem also appears if I use dropbox and download a file. I can't find it using my file manager app's search function!
If anyone knows how to address these issues leave a comment. I guess I can get launcher apps for the first one, but I don't see why it isn't in the stock software already. The second problem seems like Android needs to address that issue and the third maybe there is a tweak or something someone knows to fix it?
I found Dropbox puts it's downloaded files in it's own download folder somewhere on the sdcard. From here we can refer to problem number 2.
The media scanner thing must be a Samsung thing. My Desire instantly displays new images in the photo gallery the second after the camera saves it. In fact, I can share the photo to a number of social apps/online sites from within the camera app. You have heard me say it before, HTC know what they are doing when it comes to GUI and usability on mobile smart devices.
I found you can create folders on the home screen, but maybe that came with a 2.2 or 2.3 update, or I was just blind.
