Do companies/businesses these days just rip us off?
It's been a while since I've posted on here. I've been kinda busy, and playing Minecraft consumes your life and, if you attend some sort of university or college, will cost you subjects. But now I am here and have something to write about!

Through circumstances beyond my control, I have to move residence. I could have had another 6 months here, but an opportunity arose and I took it. Anyhow, that's enough about moving house because this is about our pay tv service.

Because we are moving, I decided to see if I could get a better deal on my pay tv service. Currently I pay about $75/month for the channels I have. Not real cheap. Well anyway, I rang my existing provider and asked them for their offers. They said, "all the channels you got now, plus sports for $90 a month and we'll knock $22 off the price for the first 6 months." So that's $68 for 6 months and $90 for the other. It was a 12 month contract. At the start, I said I was moving address. They said, "usually you have to pay $100 for change of address, but what we can do is this: the new HiDef set top box costs $100 to get so we will give you that instead of charging the move fee."

So the offer they ended up doing was to cancel the current service, start a new one, get it for $68 for 6 months, then 90 for the other. I said I'd have to discuss it with my wife.

Called the other pay tv company and asked for their offers. Exactly the same, but with no contract. I was swayed to want this offer more. So I said, "I have to think about it." and made them sweat.

Then I rang today, to cancel my service with current provider. I told them I wanna cancel. He says, "ok hang on, lets see what deal we can do." So he looks and sees I called previously and knows the offer I got. He then says, "How about this, we throw in the HiDef box for nothing it's usually $200." I said, "Can you get rid of that 12 month contract?" He said, "yep ok, 6 month contract" I said, "Hmm yeah, gonna have to discuss with the wife." So he said, "how about if I lower the price more you can agree to stay on with us now?" I said, "How much lower?" he ended up offering me another $11/month off for the first 6 months.

So I ended up getting all the channels that currently cost me $76/month, plus sports for $57/month for 6 months. After the 6 months is up, I can arse it or ring the other company and ask them to do better and then play them off against each other again.

But what the hell is with the HiDef box? "$200", "$100", "pay for that instead of a moving fee", "oh how about we just give it to you?"

WHAT THE HELL? Basically they are scamming people that don't choose to question what they have to pay for things.
